Cookie policy

The cookies and similar technologies this site uses, and how you stay in control of them.

1. What cookies are

Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. Similar technologies, such as browser local storage, work in a similar way. The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR), as amended by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, say we may only store or read them on your device with your consent, unless they are strictly necessary or fall within one of the limited exemptions.

2. Our approach

  • Strictly necessary storage is always on, because the site cannot work properly without it.
  • Analytics cookies are off until you press Accept. Rejecting is as easy as accepting.
  • UK law now lets some sites use first-party statistics cookies without consent. Google Analytics does not qualify for that exemption, so we always ask first.
  • We do not use advertising, retargeting or social media tracking cookies.

3. Strictly necessary (always on)

4. Analytics (only with your consent)

_gaGoogle Analytics 4Distinguishes one browser from another so visits can be countedUp to 2 years
_ga_1V0RHD95VGGoogle Analytics 4Keeps track of the current visit (session) for our analytics propertyUp to 2 years

These are loaded through Google Tag Manager. Before you choose, Google Tag Manager runs with every consent setting denied, which means no analytics cookies are set and no analytics data is sent. The details are in our analytics policy.

5. Embedded content

If an article ever embeds a video, the video provider may set its own cookies when you play it. We use privacy enhanced embeds where the provider offers them, and we will say on the page if an article contains one.

6. How to change your choice

  • Use at any time, also linked in the footer of every page.
  • If you withdraw consent, analytics stops on the next page load. Cookies already set stay in your browser until they expire, so delete them in your browser settings if you want them gone straight away.
  • Most browsers also let you block or delete cookies for all sites or just this one. Blocking strictly necessary storage may stop the cookie banner remembering your choice.

7. Contact

Questions about cookies: [email protected]. How we handle personal data in general is in our privacy policy.
